World-famous novelist Garret Davison takes an apartment at the historic Apthorp, a giant pre-war building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, to work on his latest novella. From the moment he moves in, things go wrong: he hears whispers inside the walls, a cat disappears, writer's block and sleepless nights torment him... And then seemingly healthy tenants in the building start to die one by one. From the first moment to the last it's never clear who's villainous or virtuous—and who’s in control.
World-famous novelist Garret Davison takes an apartment at the historic Apthorp, a giant pre-war building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, to work on his latest novella. The apartment is surprisingly run down considering the price, and the doorman is surly and just plain odd, but overshadowing even these curiosities is the next-door neighbor, who keeps dropping by at all hours for unclear reasons. As time passes, Garret is hardly able to settle into his new apartment and is taken by insomnia and writer’s block, while the other seemingly healthy tenants living in the building are dying one by one. Is he losing his mind? Is he on drugs? Or is someone manipulating him? The players in this insidious chess match only reveal their master machinations in the play’s final shocking moments.
A truly surprising and haunting new thriller.

Characters:
Henry The Doorman: An aging Hungarian doorman with a thick Middle-European accent. Is he funny or ineffectual or nefarious? We’re never sure.
Garret Davison: A famous novelist, 40, fit and attractive with a slightly haunted aura. Is he talented or a sellout or schizophrenic? We’re never sure.
Marjory Zanick: A mousy woman of indeterminate age: is she old or young or somewhere in between? A curious, dowdy, apologetic presence when the play starts, but by the final scene she has transformed into a powerful woman with the presence of a movie star. Even then… we’re never sure.
Setting: An apartment in the historic Apthorp building in New York City.

MARJORY: YES, I’M SO EMBARRASSED THAT I DIDN’T RECOGNIZE YOU WHEN WE MET THE OTHER DAY. I GOT HOME AND I THOUGHT… GARRET… GARRET DAVISON! YOUR FACE IS ON THE JACKETS OF ALL THOSE BOOKS RIGHT THERE IN MY APARTMENT BUT I… I JUST DIDN’T EXPECT TO MEET A FAMOUS AUTHOR WHILE I WAS LOOKING FOR MY CAT.
GARRET: PEOPLE NOT RECOGNIZING YOU IS THE VERY DEFINITION OF “NOT BEING FAMOUS.”
